As the first orthodox folk theatre in China, Shanghai Oriental Jiangzhou Drum Theatre was established in Shanghai, the most prosperous city in the mainland, to seek for a better development of the Chinese traditional art. All the actors of it come from the remote mountainous areas where the world earliest drum art has been succeeding for thousands of years. They were born for the drum music and burn their lives for the art. Their talented performances make every audience excited, unforgettable and memorable.

Being a flourishing cultural market with favorable policy and a city providing unprecedented opportunities for Chinese cultural development, Shanghai was the best choice when the group was looking for a place to settle itself down. About half year ago, on March 27th of 2006, Shanghai Oriental Jiangzhou Drum Theatre was set up to create works gearing to the modern times, to carry the national art treasure forward to future. At same time, it for getting support of Shanghai good culture development policy, with the purpose of seeking a new development mode geared to the promotion of Chinese folk art.

Now the Theatre has many first-class musicians, including FAN Jianmin, YANG Leiheng, HAO Lijun and HAN Junliang, and a large number of young national drummers who have won prizes at all kinds of competitions. They grew up with drum music surrounding. It may not be exaggerated to say that they have the rhythm in their blood. Even when they were children, they could beat with anything they picked up. And they knew how to play so much that they could perform extemporaneously on local stages at any time, and all they needed was just some simple dressing. Especially in recent years, with the drum music having become a necessary art form on the stages in local formal activities, their strong feelings for the art, which has been hold for thousands of years, bursted out of all a sudden. Actually, more than ten years ago, when Jiangzhou Drum was first played as a kind of true art in Beijing Odeum, it has surprised all the media, both domestic and foreign. The rhythm coming from ancient China spreaded to the Former Soviet Union, Denmark, Britain, France, Spain, Greece, Japan, North Korea, Singapore as well as Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, and got great resounding.

Shanghai Oriental Jiangzhou Drum Theatre invested hundreds of thousands of RMB to manufacture several batches of fine drums, including Big Drums, Small Drums, Medium Drums, Waist Drum, Shaped-flowerpot Drum and kinds of brass instruments and costumes that needed in the performance. Besides playing Chinese drum programs in public, Shanghai Oriental Jiangzhou Drum Theatre also provides sterling Chinese drums to other art groups. These drums are made of mulberries, locust trees, Chinese catalpas and other woods that grow in Taihang Mountain. The drums are carefully made by workers with inherited handcraft technics. Their timbre are pure and their shape are exquisite. They have been recognized and are purchased by the musicians from the US, Singapore, Taiwan, etc. for many years. With the aim to promote Chinese national music, the Theatre has collected sorted out a large quantity of fine drum works from local drum music. On the other hand, the Theatre also contributes to the Chinese national music by producing and performing many contemporary music pieces with high qualities.
